Sara is the founder and creative brain behind Camel City Counseling. She holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology with a minor in Business Administration from Salem College (1999) as well as a Masters degree in Counseling and Counselor Education from the University of North Carolina Greensboro (2006). After a short career in Human Resources and Trial Consulting, she began a second career in Counseling. Sara interned as a fellow in the UNCG Nicholas Vacc Counseling and Consulting Clinic and has since worked in foster care and adoptions and provided outpatient therapy in a variety of settings including a teen mother program, ecumenical private practice, and psychiatric multi-specialty practice.
Trained in EMDR, IFS, Family Systems, DBT, Dissociative Disorders, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness, Sara has spent much of her career working with older teens, families, and adults navigating a variety of loss and trauma. She is deeply grateful for the many clients who have trusted her with their care over the years and humbled by their resiliency in the face of deep tragedy and human suffering.
After owning a solo practice for a year, Sara began feeling energized by the idea of serving other mental health professionals. By combining her entrepreneurial spirit, business background, and clinical point of view, she founded Camel City Counseling in 2019. Her mission was to open a small office in Winston-Salem and invite highly qualified colleagues to create a loving space for both clinicians and clients. She aimed to build a professional environment that prevents clinical burnout while supporting the unique needs of mental health providers.
Throughout the pandemic, she expanded Camel City Counseling to meet the growing mental health needs of the community while continuing to support her team. Now, she focuses on ensuring the practice mission and vision are felt by everyone who enters these spaces, including clients and staff.
Sara is passionate about supporting clinical growth and provides clinical supervision for both internal and external provisionally licensed counselors. She also established Camel City Counseling as an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider and offers training and consulting to mental health professionals across the country.
She continues to maintain a small caseload of highly motivated clients who are focused on healing and meaningful change after trauma.
When Sara is not focused on the practice, she is reading, laughing with friends, thrifting, studying liberation theology, volunteering, or spending time with her family.
